Uncharted movie director doesn’t want to ‘trace the game’

Since their existence, movies based on video games franchises have not been the most critically lauded. Like many things, there are a few exceptions. But for every Detective Pikachu, there are six Resident Evils. But Dan Trachtenberg, the director of the upcoming Uncharted film adaptation, wants to buck that trend by creating a faithful story that isn’t just copying what has already been done in the games.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Trachtenberg discussed why he doesn’t want to just make a scene-for-scene remake of the game’s story.

“I have been approached with different versions of this tale, and have always been not that interested in it because I didn’t want to trace the game,” said Trachtenberg. Instead, the movie will follow Nathan Drake, played by Spider-Man Far From Home‘s Tom Holland, in a time period before Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Obviously, there is a reason why Trachtenberg is taking this direction for the upcoming film.

“I didn’t really feel like it was at all worthy of making a video game adaptation,” Trachtenberg began to explain, “if we’re just gonna copy what the game is and just serve people a lesser experience than what they’ve experienced in such an incredible way.”

Trachtenberg seems to be very confident in his take on Nathan Drake’s newest adventure. So much so, he stated, “if Naughty Dog so chose to make another Uncharted game featuring Nate and Sully… this movie’s story is probably the story that they would want to tell.” Considering the love many players have for Nathan Drake’s tale, which has spanned a total of five games, that is quite the tout.

For those unfamiliar with Dan Trachtenberg, he directed was the critically acclaimed sci-fi film 10 Cloverfield Lane, which released back in 2016. He also directed the VR episode of Black Mirror‘s third season (“Playtest”), an impressive Portal short, and the recent video for last weekend’s TennoCon. The Uncharted movie is set to release on December 18, 2020. Hopefully, it’ll be good since Trachtenberg has wanted to make an Uncharted film for quite some time.
