Quake 2 Remaster Enhances Game, Improves AI, Adds Mission Packs, and More

If you’ve been paying attention lately, you’ll have heard that Quake 2 was (possibly) getting a remaster. Well, that day has finally come, as id Software‘s classic FPS has been given a modern facelift.

Plus that awesome soundtrack

If you already had the Quake sequel entry installed, you’ll have probably seen a pretty significant update on PC by now. Say hello to the remastered version of Q2.

Similar to when the original game was given a visual and quality-of-life tweak back in 2021, Quake 2 has been brought into the modern gaming era.

It’s still the same old shooter that it was two and half decades ago, but now it’s been visually improved with modern lighting techniques. There’s also been improvements to enemy AI, the implementation of accessibility features, and the game now supports 4K.

On top of that, the update also brings with it the two official mission packs: The Reckoning and Ground Zero. As if that wasn’t enough, you can also play the Nintendo 64 version, and there’s also a new campaign called Call of the Machine, which was created by Wolfenstein developer MachineGames.

If you want to see exactly what’s been changed in this up-to-date version of Quake 2, you can check out the patch notes and other details on the game’s Steam page.

The remaster was developed by Nightdive Studios, who also did the enhanced version of Quake. The team is known for remastering many classics, including System Shock and Turok. The company is also working on a modern version of Sin.

To summarize: if you have a copy of Quake 2 on PC, the upgrade is now rolling out for free to anyone who has the original game from Steam, the Microsoft Store, or Good Old Games.
